8-1-19 Long Day of Driving

Today was a long day of driving as we knew it would be.  Our first “fun stop” is at our friend’s house outside of Chicago so we wanted to drive as far as we could today so we could arrive at her house on Friday at a decent hour.  Driving in Eastern Colorado is not the most exciting as you can see:

Our gas stop at Julesburg was exciting because we could get out of the car and I could take a picture of this sign. I do think Julesburg is overdoing the whole “wild west” theme with this sign.

During the drive I was searching for some interesting pictures and was able to capture a car towing this pig.  I would love to know the story behind that, but I leave that up to your collective imaginations.

Crossing in to NE was a banner moment as it allowed me to take the obligatory picture of the state sign and we started seeing more corn (I am nostalgic about sweet corn due to my MN roots and my father’s obsession with sweet corn when I was a kid)

We were thinking we wanted to drive until Omaha so I was tasked with figuring out where to camp.  I checked freecampsites.net and found the perfect place to light for the night – a casino parking lot located in Council Bluffs, IA.  It was perfect because:

  1. It was free.
  2. It was level so we did not need to unhitch and could make a fast getaway in the morning.
  3. It was next to a casino so we could go grab a drink.
  4. It was in IA so we would end day 1 with CO and NE in the bag.
  5. It was unusual (who camps in a casino parking lot?) and I am lover of the unusual.
