We have been excited to drive on the Cabot Trail since we first came up with this trip idea. Today is the day that we will finally be on what is known as one of the most beautiful drives in North America.
However, we have a problem with our camper’s water pump so our first stop is a Cape Breton Trailer Sales. The technician had us out of there within an hour, Yay! He cleared something blocking the water line and we are now on our way. That was a relief as we were wondering if we needed a new pump (even though Tom replaced it last year).
To start the trail on the East side we had to take a small ferry. It was such a short ride I barely noticed when we started -much less once we got to the other side:
Then we knew we were finally on the Cabot Trail.

The Trail is lined with scenic views, restaurants, lodging options, and many artisans and their shops.

We immediately stopped to sample some local cuisine. The seafood chowder was yummy.

The island of Cape Breton is quite proud of its Scottish roots so there are some Scottish vendors along the Cabot trail as well. Clearly this vendor has a sense of humor.

Cape Breton National Park winds in and around the Cabot trail and private property (similar to how Acadia National Park winds around private property on Mt. Desert Island further south). Excitement abounded when we realized we were in the park.

We have reservations at Broad Cove campground inside the park so after meandering through various shops we set up camp and then headed for more exploration sans trailer.
We stopped at Lakies Point and took obligatory photos.
We also drove on an offshoot road off of the Cabot Trail at Neil’s Harbor

This offshoot road was recommended to us by our lunchtime waiter. It dead ends at White point where there is a VERY small fishing village and another gorgeous view (after a small hike).
Sufficiently sated by scenery (do I get points for alliteration?) we returned to Broad Cove. Incidentally, one of the things that I love about Canadian National Parks is that the majority of the campgrounds have really nice showers – that are free! Cape Breton is no exception and we intend to take full advantage!
