8-22-19 Ferry to Newfoundland

Today is the day that we finally travel to Newfoundland!  Since it’s an island, getting there is no small feat – you must go via plane or ferry.  Since flying our car and camper was cost prohibitive we decided on going by the ferry.  We are going from N. Sydney, Nova Scotia to Port aux Basques, Newfoundland.  The crossing is about 6 hours, but we lose ½ hour because Newfoundland’s strange time zone.  We will now be 3 ½ hours ahead of Denver.  The ferry was scheduled to leave at 11:45.

About 1 hour before the ferry was scheduled to leave they told us to get back in our vehicles (we had already parked them in lanes according to their instruction).  We were in the one of the last lanes to enter the ship.

Even though we will be on the ferry during the day we got a cabin so that we could stretch out and relax.

We waved goodbye to Nova Scotia….

….explored the ship a bit…

…and had some lunch.  While we were eating lunch I looked out on the water and saw 5 porpoises right next to the ferry – our personal escort!

Before we knew it (well not really – it seemed to take a long time), we were docked in Port aux Basques.  Luckily we were amongst the first vehicles to get off the ferry.

Whenever we mentioned to anyone that we were going to Newfoundland everyone advised us to NOT DRIVE AT NIGHT.  Evidently there are moose all over Newfoundland and they like to wander on to the highway at night.  Since car vs. moose does not sound like a fun game we hightailed it from the ferry to JT Cheesman Provincial Park – conveniently located about 6 km from the ferry terminal.

After setting up the camper we strolled over to the nearby ocean inlet  – lovely.

We have only been on Newfoundland for a couple of hours and we cannot stop talking about how cool it is.  It reminds us both of a cross between New Zealand and Alaska.  This promises to be a great place to visit.
