Today’s destination is Cavendish – the location of the house with green gables that was the inspiration for Lucy Montgomery’s novel, Anne of Green Gables. Because PEI is small it didn’t take long to get there. Parks Canada has turned the house into part of the National Parks of PEI. There is an exhibit building (shielding the house from the road and forcing tourists to pay an entrance fee) that contains information about Lucy Montgomery – the author. She wrote 19 other novels, but of course is remembered for her novel about the red-haired orphan named Anne Shirley. Lucy grew up in PEI but NOT In the house with green gables. Her cousins owned that house and she visited it frequently.

Parks Canada has turned the house in to a museum, of sorts – basically furnishing it the way it is portrayed in the novel. They even have an upstairs bedroom that “could’ have been Anne’s.

The grounds surrounding the house also have various period props/pieces around. Here is the type of buggy that could have been used to pick Anne Shirley up at the train station:

There was an opportunity to play dress up so I embraced that wholeheartedly

It was interesting, but felt a bit like we had entered the twilight zone and were supposed to pretend that Anne of Green Gables was an actual person.
Evidently twilight zone experiences make me hungry so we headed off for lunch. I had some world famous PEI mussels, yummy – I vowed to have more at dinner.

Another scenic part of Cavendish is the sand dunes and the red rocks.
The food in PEI has been fabulous (no cooking in our camper for us here). We took another opportunity to enjoy great PEI food and my first course, was, you guessed it – mussels. My entrée was lobster.

It really was an exceptional meal – very fitting for our last night in PEI.

That food looks incredible! I miss good seafood
