9-20-19 through 9-22-19 Back in the US and back to Chicago

After saying a tearful good bye to our Canadian friends we set off for the US.  We targeted the Sarnia border crossing as it is north of Detroit so we figured it would be less trafficked (and we were game to miss Detroit).

We drove 2-3 hours and then waved our last good bye to Canada (alas we were not in the most picturesque area at the time, but it’s the thought that counts).

We crossed the bridge to the US.  Please note the US and Canadian flags next to each other.  YAY!

After two uneventful questions from immigration (1.  Where did you go, and 2) What did you buy) we were back in the US.  We told him we bought some wine.  We were afraid he would ask how much wine we purchased (about 15 bottles) and we would get caught up in paying duty, etc.  But he let us through and we entered Michigan.

We stopped in Lansing and camped at the Walmart (far cry from National Parks, eh)?  Clearly not the best digs, but directly on the route and we did not intend to sightsee here.

The next day we headed to Chicago to visit our friends there again.  Along the way we saw a sign for Michigan’s best donuts so we had to buy a box.

We entered IL and soon began to experience the wonderful Chicago traffic.

We arrived at our friend’s house in a huge rainstorm so I looked like a drowned rat by the time we parked the camper and got inside (there will be no photos of that!).  The doughnuts were a big hit so the next day we headed for their favorite doughnut place:  Spunky Dunker.  Maybe I should end this donut theme as it is getting frightfully fattening.

We spent the rest of the week relaxing, and chatting.  Diane and I teamed up to make dinner on Sunday night.  It was darn good even if I do say so myself.
