8-16-19 Five Islands

We left Lunenburg and headed for the very small town of Five Islands.  The night before Tom had found a campground there called Diamond Shores. We were not sure what we would find because making a reservation meant simply leaving our name – no credit card, no deposit, nothing.

When we turned off the highway to the road into the campground we knew we had found a real gem.

Driving in we were greeted by a camp host – Fran.  She explained where the showers were, etc., but we were not really paying attention because we were completely gobsmacked by the view. Five Islands is on the Bay of Fundy (Nova Scotia side) so the huge tidal phenomenon that we experienced in New Brunswick is present at Five Islands as well.  We arrived when the tide was in, so all of the Five Islands were submerged in water.  When the tide is at its lowest point the islands have no water anywhere near them.

After recovering from the gorgeous view and setting up camp we set off for the nearby Red Head hike in Five Islands Provincial Park.  We were initially concerned when we saw the “Danger” sign, but realized that we did not need to be concerned because we had no intention of scrambling around the cliffs.

We crossed some bridges on the hike and experienced several look-outs (or look-offs as the Canadians say).

When we returned to camp after our hike the tides had started to move out so we were able to see how the islands and the beach look at a lower tide.  In the second photo you can see some trucks out on the beach that are completely underwater at high tide.

We met our next door neighbors, friendly, chatty Wisconsinites, and enjoyed chatting with them and petting their golden lab  named Rosie.

After dinner we headed to the local Briny Bay Bar for some live music.  The guy who played did a pretty good jog covering various popular songs from across the decades.
